General belief in us is "things are set right only after it goes wrong" yet again it is proved! Yes!
Revolution - "The Change" we talk about, which is due to happen in every regard! and this time its the regional entertainment industry. "The Great Kannada Film Industry"
I do not want to say that its pathetic, ruled by emperors who have lived their, blah blah blah. Thats all know! and its the same in every damn regional entertainment industry not only in India, across the world!
It all started with fancy like discussion on crowd funded movie in 2011. Seriously I had no belief when they spoke about that. At least in my state! We had classic examples of these kind of failures in Hindi and Bengali entertainment industries prior to Kannada one. People like Shyam Benegal, Anurag Kashyap and Abhay Kumar have failed in main stream cinema centers living in India for decades. Now from this point on, it was pretty sure for me that this try by Pawan will be a big time flop simply because there is no consumer demand for Kannada movies in Karnataka.
Bangalore the center for kannda film industry had 48 theaters once upon a time in city center. In today's scenario I see only multiplexes with multiple screens playing other language movies with hardly one or two shows in between. Frankly speaking it feels like they play shows in fear of groups supporting Kannada in Karnataka. Imagine the kind of situation our own language is facing by our own people.
Coming back to the industry, what is peculiar in Karnataka is, most of the production houses have their own distribution channels. Either they produce commercial Kannada movies or they distribute other language movies in Karnataka. I donot see anywhere in Karnataka we have core concentration of Kannada movies aligned to consumer needs. Starting from the dubbing rights upto the movie distribution its only the enforcement.
If it were to be the consumer oriented industry then why don't we have classics coming out? Let it be a short, low budget movie, why cant it be released in theaters? Lets keep these low budget one aside. Kannada movies have won plenty of national awards till date. How many have been released in theaters till date? I hardly remember any "Girish Kasaravalli's" movies being released in theaters.
Disturbingly looking at all these, I had felt there should be a jolt somewhere. We need to come out of our ignorance and ask for better entertainment in our own language instead of following a heard learning new language just for the sake of entertainment. And how meaningful would it be? God knows.!
With the way "LUCIA" is been portrayed, made, carried forward and marketed I'm quite impressed. Is this the time we call "A Change" is due to happen?
I being a consumer, I demand the kind of movie I want. I get people like me together to fund a movie we want. I sit at place I want and watch what I want. Can this be not possible in future? I think we are already in future. All it needs is a little push from matured audience like us who can think on what we want.
For me best example is "LUCIA" and have pre-ordered. It is not only I watch what I want. It is also like I get paid for what I show.
And YES. This is a turning point for KFI. People are being revolutionized and am confident enough to say I will meet them in more numbers soon.
